This August, I plan to embrace the Concept2 Dog Days of Summer Challenge, and I encourage fellow fitness enthusiasts to join me on this adventurous journey. Concept2, the global leader in manufacturing rowing machines, has organized an annual summer challenge designed to motivate indoor rowers to push their limits and reach their fitness goals.
The Dog Days of Summer Challenge is a month-long event that runs from August 1-28. The challenge encourages participants to complete cumulative distance goals each week, starting from 10,000 meters in the first week to 40,000 meters in the last week. However, this year, I am determined to not just meet, but exceed these goals on my reliable Model C Concept2 Indoor Rowing machine, also known as an “erg.”
Indoor rowing or “erging,” is a highly efficient exercise that engages various muscle groups, providing both cardio and strength training. Concept2 has revolutionized this fitness area, making it accessible to a broader audience with their range of products, the crown jewel being the erg.
One of the unique aspects of Concept2 is their online logbook, a feature that allows rowers to log their workouts, participate in challenges, and compare their results with others worldwide. During the Dog Days of Summer Challenge, I plan to meticulously log every meter rowed on my PM5 monitor, the high-tech performance monitor that comes standard on all Concept2 rowers.
The PM5 monitor not only tracks distance, speed, pace, calories, and watts, but it also has built-in games and the ability to connect to heart rate belts and apps. One such application is the ErgData app, a free application designed to provide additional statistics, store and retrieve workout data, and sync with the Concept2 Online Logbook.
Concept2’s history is as rich as its commitment to quality and performance. Since its inception in 1976, Concept2 has been committed to delivering top-quality fitness products that last a lifetime. Their indoor rower, beloved by athletes worldwide, has evolved over the years, with the Model C now regarded as a classic.
While Concept2 machines are popular among gym goers, purchasing one for home use has several advantages. Reliable retailers include the Concept2 website, fitness specialty stores, and online marketplaces like Amazon. As for the price, it may vary based on the model and retailer, but as of my knowledge cutoff in 2021, a new Concept2 Indoor Rower costs around $900-$1100.
To participate in the Dog Days of Summer Challenge, you need an online logbook at concept2.com. Once the challenge begins, each workout meter rowed should be logged in this online logbook. Remember, you’re not alone in this challenge. Concept2 has a supportive community, and even hosts weekly sessions via ErgData’s Real Time Loop for participants to complete their challenge meters together.
Indoor rowing is more than just a workout. It’s a test of resilience, a commitment to self-improvement, and a community of individuals who share these values. So, let’s gear up and make the most of the Dog Days of Summer Challenge this August. Let’s row towards our best selves, one stroke at a time.
The Dog Days of Summer Concept2 Challenge is a four-week challenge that runs from August 1-28. To complete the challenge, you must log the following distances:
- Week 1: 10,000 meters
- Week 2: 20,000 meters
- Week 3: 30,000 meters
- Week 4: 40,000 meters
Distances can be accumulated over multiple workouts, and RowErg, SkiErg, BikeErg, on water, and on snow meters all count. BikeErg meters are counted as half when applied to the challenge.
There are also shorter distance goals for kids (aged 16 and under) and adaptive athletes.
In addition to the challenge, Concept2 is hosting four community sessions each week of the challenge on ErgData’s Real Time Loop. These sessions are a great way to get your Dog Days of Summer Challenge meters in with other members of the Concept2 community.
I plan to participate in the Dog Days of Summer Challenge this August, and I plan to max out all the numbers if not power through more than the required meters. I have a Model C Concept2 indoor rowing ergometer, and I’m confident that I can reach my goals.
I’ve been rowing for several years, and I’ve participated in several Concept2 challenges in the past. I know that the best way to stay motivated is to set challenging goals and then track my progress. I’m also planning to join the community sessions on ErgData, which will help me stay connected with other rowers and stay motivated.
I’m excited to participate in the Dog Days of Summer Challenge, and I’m confident that I can reach my goals. I encourage you to join me and see how far you can push yourself!
